Epidemiological Bulletin 05/31/20

We are a family owned and operated business.

The table shows the data from COVID-19 in the municipalities of Maranhão where they affect Indigenous Lands (until May 31, 2020). In it we present the numbers made available by the municipal health departments, either on the websites of city halls and / or official social networks. As we can see, many of these municipalities do not discriminate between the cases of COVID-19 among indigenous peoples and, when they do, they do not always bring data for the specificity of the peoples, as is the case of the municipalities of Arame, Montes Altos and Sítio Novo, which refer to the indigenous people from the categories "Indigenous Area" and "Village".

The lack of recognition of the ethnic plurality existing in Maranhão territory by the state / municipal government is further reinforced when reading the records of indigenous cases in the municipality of Amarante do Maranhão. In the bulletin of this municipality, the term "indigenous land" appears, disregarding, as in other municipalities, the people (s) that live there. In TI Governador, two peoples live: the Gavião / Pykopyê and the Krenyê. The recording of COVID-19 data among indigenous people in these terms disregards the diversity of indigenous peoples in Maranhão, with the notion of a generic "Indian" prevailing.

* In some municipalities, the latest data update, made available by the health departments, is prior to May 31, 2020. In these cases, the date of the last
update.
** The way in which indigenous case data is presented is in accordance with the Epidemiological Bulletin released by the said municipalities.
*** The epidemiological bulletin of this municipality does not discriminate the situation of cases of COVID-19 among the indigenous people.

In view of the current scenario of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, which is going through the worst phase since the first case of contamination in March 2020, continuing to make the health situation of indigenous peoples in the state visible and mapping the Covid-19 pandemic continues being a challenge. In a context of dissemination of fake news and denials that has affected the indigenous people and made it impossible to immunize the different peoples spread across the state, with a very high number of refusals, present the vaccination data and invest in their publication in a specific and differentiated way , is synonymous with love and appreciation of life.
